This was an incredible article. For years, I attended and reported on the PAFF. Some of the most remarkable films I have ever encountered. This gives me so much inspiration to take the action steps to pursue relationships with these companies. So much of my writing fits into their culture and themes. This says it all: Psychologically, we’re predisposition to value mainstream approval over even our primary audiences. We essentially continue trying to sell to the descendants of people that use to sell us. While independent African-American filmmakers work to create their own ecosystems—partnering with local artists, building collectives, and cultivating their own distribution pipelines too often there remains stagnated thinking which leads to treating black entertainment consumers like a monolith.
