Great piece, David. This work – this kind of storytelling – requires introspection and bravery. I believe that’s how we can create authentic characters that people remember.
Thiis is an astute article with some profound insights. With Sinners, it feels as though Mississippi is a character with flaws, historical context and trauma built into it.
Infusing flaws, fears and phobias into our Black characters absolutely makes the narrative stronger and the theme will develop more naturally. The key seems to be – have a strong grasp of character, before the plot is formulated around your protagonist. Thanks for bringing awareness to that aspect.
“Great characters make great narratives,” sums it up. Dropping gems.
