This is all true and important to be mindful of! Thank you.
Thank you for this insight. I appreciate the fact-checking with the financial distress streaming services has caused but also how that can be seen as a way to introduce new narratives.
This is a great timely piece. I just read that Paramount’s Showtime streaming app is shutting down. I believe they shut down some of their streaming services last year. As a tool, AI is really going to shift how creatives can develop and market their scripts. Yesterday, I practiced creating movie posters for my scripts using Chat GPT. In order to stand out, writers are going to have become better at marketing their work. I’m definitely including myself in this! Marketing has never been my forte. I can create content all day long, but my marketing needs work. For example, I’m a member of the International Screenwriter’s Association, and there is an option to apply for select writing gigs, if you are a Connect Member. When you attach your logline and script, you now have the option to attach marketing materials like posters, one-pagers, pitch deck, pitch video, etc. I think writers who are able to visually “sell” their script will have an advantage. That’s why I was using Chat GPT! Now, there isn’t an option to create an AI video, but you tell Chat GPT to create an outline for pitch deck, a pitch video, etc. It’s really revolutionary.
I think it’s essential to leverage our creativity and resilience to overcome these challenges. This involves honing our craft, networking with each other, and exploring alternative avenues for production. Collaboration and community-building with fellow creatives can also be invaluable, as we amplify each other’s voices and support one another in navigating the obstacles ahead. While the road may be challenging, our stories are powerful and deserving of recognition. By staying informed, proactive, and united in our efforts, we can continue to break through barriers and ensure that our narratives find our rightful place in or outside the streaming landscape. “It’s easier to reach out, than up.” Issa Rae.
