WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is now my new morning mantra for my early 5am writing sessions. This has inspired me big time. I will start on this in the morning. I love reading the Hollywood Reporter but this ignites my creativity mega big.

Here are my steps
Daily Routine: Make reading the news a daily habit. Dedicate time to scanning headlines and delving into stories that pique your interest each day.
Diverse Sources: Read from a variety of news outlets to get multiple perspectives. Include sources that cater to different demographics, political views, and cultural backgrounds. Make it a point to read news targeting a community you’re not familiar with.
Deep Dive: When a story piques your interest, go beyond the headline. Read related articles, editorials, and follow-up pieces to gain a comprehensive understanding. Find YouTube videos from people living in that reality.
Contextual Analysis: Consider the broader context of the news. What societal trends or historical events are influencing this story? How do they relate to larger themes in your writing? What can be applied to all humans? Is there a message hiding in plain sight about love, pain, greed, charity, etc?
I love this! It’s so true, the news even though the newspaper isn’t as highly regarded as it used to be, is so vital and opens up a world of possibilities to create dynamic stories. I remember one of the writing prompts from last year, I created a story based on the robberies that were taking place in Windsor Hills area, which caused a restaurant that had been established for decades to close down and relocate.
The one-liners that you created David are really interesting and it would be so cool to see written into different stories. Also thank you for the examples, Honk for Jesus, Save your Soul is so profound. I grew up in the church and there are a lot of individuals who aren’t open about who they are but are heavily active in the church.
As well as the Big Short, that is one of my most favorite movies. It’s so interesting how that relates today. Once the fed rate cuts took place last year, so many people purchased things that they couldn’t afford, creating another cycle of inflation like the one in 2008.

This is a great bit of inspiration! Thanks for the suggestion. I can’t say how many times I have read a great story I find myself thinking about and then someone makes a movie/tv show about it later on! Always leaves with the thought of what if I had followed that interest/excitement into writing my own take…
Reading the news is very helpful in getting ideas. I’m concerned about legal/financial ramifications. For example if a story was done about the radicalization of the Buffalo Shooter who killed a supermarket full of Black folks as a cautionary tale about ‘civil war fever’ that is spreading through a well-armed segment of our society…would we possibly get sued by the killer? It could be fictionalized by using the techniques mentioned above to avoid that, but it would lose the historical significance.
I love the idea of using news and current events to develop high concept stories! The news after all is real life – most of the times – and stories are ultimately interpretations of life. I love this challenge!
