This was a very important and informative essay that delves into the psychology of screenwriting. Self-care is important, and you gave some great tips about how to think outside the box when it comes to improving how we feel about our work. We need breaks, and we all need well-balanced lives outside of just writing. Also, having a career as a screenwriter is more than just having a great script. We have to know how to convey our story in a compelling way to others, and this involves pitching, which I have to admit, I’m still working on getting better at! Thanks so much, David. I would love to share this.
Beautifully said, David. This is both inspiring and grounded in reality. Thanks for the reminder that with intention and resilience, we’re building more than careers—we’re building legacies.
Those long odds are sure ugly in the face. The reason why you write has to be stronger than the many obstacles. It’s like our own personal – hero’s journey. Face that ‘all is lost’ moment, knowing that our ancestors went through much worse. Denied the right to read and write. How despicable. Finally, we have a chance to tell OUR STORY. What an opportunity…and what a responsibility. That concept pushes me past whatever goes down. I like the idea of the OBS reading group, dedicated to giving feedback to our comrades. Not to tear down – but to build up.
Very good information. I too enjoyed the Navy SEALS perspective. As a retired Sailor who provided classified communications for the SEALS and graduated SERE (Survival school) this perspective is something I can use for my projects. Thanks for sharing.
There are many take aways from this article, however, the biggest one lands on the Navy Seals perspective. I had a miliatary father so this landed hard for me as a screemwriter.
