  • In medias res is one of my favorite ways to start a scene, but it’s one I have to be careful not to use too often. I appreciated the example of evocative specificity. I’ll make sure to use it to sharpen my work.

  • This has changed my perspective in regards to sculpturing organic scenes within a crucible chamber. Noted, these are mega take aways from this article: “Think of every scene as a crucible—a pressurized environment where characters are transformed by contact with each other and circumstances. Start from the energy or the conflict that’s going to force a collision between characters. Create tension and then see what emerges from the pressure, not from characters delivering information; but, instead from characters in tense situations they didn’t want and now have to resolve. think “this scene begins when the pressure is already building.”

  • I especially enjoyed learning more about “evocative specificity” in writing a scene, so we are not directing, but giving the director and actor some feeling to work with. Thank you!
