Great insights into Barry’s journey, David. I am pretty sure my career would have ended after the racist remark from Oliver Stone. High or not, I’m getting sick of people black people as their own a battering ram. This sentiment is coming off the heels of the BAFTA fiasco. It just leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
I loved his work. He is a big inspiration to me, and is truly missed.
Learned so much by reading this article and it really made me want to be a better writer… to know that my writing has the potential to create a legacy that impacts people for generations. I became curious about reading Oliver Stone’s screenplay for “Wall Street” to see how Cooper taught himself. He was a super talented screenwriter and is a reminder that we as Black writers need to “craft residence stories” and creatively share the Black experience(s). Research and investigative styles this is key. His blueprint it golden! Appreciate the suggestions
What a legacy. All of OBS should know of this man and the path he used. Interesting tale about the WALL STREET movie he utilized to teach himself. Even more interesting was Oliver Stone’s cave man response after getting praised by him. Cold-blooded. Sorry to read about his demise. His works live on
So many rich lessons and insights from this one article. This was a master class lesson in craft, staying grounded, persistence, navigating the business and staying true to your voice. I am thankful to Cooper for casting Vanessa Williams as Keisha. It was a pivotal role for her career and she’s an incredible artist/former creative partner. Thank you so much for this article. BIG LESSON:: Your background as a cultural observer is your greatest asset; use investigative skills or personal immersion to ground your tales in an unspoken, but universal truth.
