OBS PRESENTS: “NIGHT AT THE MOVIES”
LOS
ANGELES, CA - On May 15, 2008 the Organization of Black
Screenwriters is launching the first of a series of four (4) movie
nights this year where we will showcase short films from OBS
filmmakers/writers as well as other local filmmakers/writers. This
will be an opportunity to observe the creative visions of determined
and passionate individuals.
“Soap and Roses” by Rae Shaw
Soap and roses tells the story of
Raymond, a good-natured Chicago Southside janitor who in his
off-hours volunteers at a local community arts center run by a young
artist, Julissa. When a series of disconcerting episodes occurs in
Raymond’s life, he strikes out at the person he most admires; and
thereafter begins Raymond’s struggle to resolve the consequences of
an act he cannot reconcile. 33 minutes
“Side By Side: The Story of the
50/50 Group of Sierra Leone” by Dwayne Johnson-Cochran
This is the story of a group of
women working together to change politics in the once war-torn
nation of Sierra Leone. 15

“Old Ladies Driving” by Shawnelle Gibbs and Shawnee Gibbs
Old Ladies Driving follows the
Cadillac adventures of two old friends, Irma and Ruth Anne. It is
the first installation of the fun and irreverent animated comedy
series in the vein of Family Guy and
Dr. Katz. 2:35 minutes
“Voices
of Scleroderma” Directed by Kimberly Allen/Produced by Zelie
Dember-Slack
Excerpts of an interview with AJ
reveal information about her battle with a life-threatening rare
autoimmune disease called Scleroderma, which is characterized by the
hardening of the skin and soft tissue. 6:30 minutes
“One Hot Joint” by Zelie
Dember-Slack
Marvin, a popular high school
senior/drug dealer, has plans to get his classmate Jackie high in
order to steal her virginity by 4th period. To ensure
success, he laces her joint with a few aphrodisiacs, but the results
are far from sexy. Marvin is horrified by the unusual side effects
that Jackie experiences. 12:41 minutes
“The Witness Pt 1 & 2” by
Sylvester Harold
A woman's failure to testify
against the man who raped her, may have caused another woman's
death. 14 minutes
Tickets to “A Night at the Movies”

OBS MEMBERS:
The Special Election will
be held at the June 7, 2008 meeting. We will be
voting on Board of Directors & an Assistant Secretary/Financial
Secretary – Nominations are now open and should be
made at the May 3rd meeting. You may
nominate yourself or someone you thing can handle the duties. Duties
included on attached sheet. Nominees must be present
at next meeting and address the body. The voting will take place June
7th.

In
the 2006-07 season, 87% of
FOX
Broadcasting Company (FBC) series had at least one
diverse writer on staff, continuing to increase each year (80% in
'04-'05).
In
the 2006-07 season, we employed 8 Story Editors on FBC series whose
first jobs were as Staff Writers under the Fox Diversity program.
